How is breast surgery performed?
Breast Enlargement
Also known as an augmentation mammoplasty this is a surgical procedure used to increase the size and enhance the shape of the breasts. It can correct slight sagging of the breast and increase breast firmness.
There are several techniques used for this procedure including a variety of options for incision sites and implant placement. Dr Buckland will help you decide which procedure is right for you. The operation usually takes 1-2 hours and is performed under general anaesthetic as a day only procedure or an overnight stay.
There are several different types of implants and again, Dr Buckland will help you decide which one is best for you. Implants vary in their contents, outer surface, shape and size. It is important to customise all these issues for your individual needs and desires.

Breast reduction
Also known as a reduction mammoplasty this procedure is used to reduce overly large or sagging breasts to a more comfortable shape and size. There are several techniques used to reduce the size of the breasts. Surgery duration is usually 2-4 hours. The aim is to provide youthful, naturally shaped breasts whilst minimizing scars.

Breast Lift
Also known as a mastopexy. The goal is to reposition the nipple/areolar complex at a natural level. Duration of surgery is 2-2.5 hours and is done under a general anaesthetic as a day stay or overnight stay in hospital.


Where can I have the surgery performed?
Breast surgery can be performed in a day surgery centre or in hospital. Whether or not you stay in hospital depends on the type of operation you have and your general health. All breast surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic.

What about scarring?
Scars are the inevitable result of surgery - Dr Buckland is specially trained to minimise scarring and keep them as inconspicuous as possible. Most scars will be along natural skin lines and creases; these will fade with time to become less noticeable. Dr Buckland will discuss with you a number of scar treatment techniques which are effective at minimizing long term scars.

Are silicon breast implants safe?
Since the removal of silicon breast implants from use in the U.S. there have been extensive clinical trials performed on 10,000’s of women too look at safety. It has been demonstrated that there is NO association with increased risk of breast cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or mixed connective tissue disease. Silicon breast implants are freely available in Australia.
