It is a routine practice at this surgery that all instruments used during any procedure are either single use disposable instruments or autoclaved on site.

What is liposuction?
Also known as suction-assisted lipectomy/ ‘liposculpture’, this procedure can be used to remove local pockets of fat that can occur in the thighs, buttocks, abdomen, and neck. It can be used to improve your overall body appearance by reducing and recontouring the area of concern; it is not a substitute for weight loss nor a cure for obesity.

How would this procedure help me?
A consultation with Dr Buckland is the first step - you should openly and honestly discuss your goals and he will help you decide which is the right procedure for you. Sometimes surgical removal of excess skin or fat may be necessary. It is important to remember that a “new body” does not guarantee a new life or an end to all personal problems. You need to bear in mind that the goal is improvement, not perfection. Liposuction can help to improve your appearance; the procedure is best combined with a programme of dietary regulation and regular exercise.

How is the procedure performed?
You may have a local anaesthetic or a general anaesthetic depending on the extent of your procedure. A tube attached to high powered suction is inserted through a small incision and the area of bulging fat removed. You will usually be provided with a pressure garment to wear for 4-6 weeks to help reduce bruising and swelling and to encourage the skin to contract to the new shape.

Where can I have the procedure performed?
This procedure can be performed as a day case in hospital or with a short stay depending on the extent of the procedure and your general health.

What about scarring?
Scarring is an inevitable part of surgery but Dr Buckland is specially trained to minimise or make them as inconspicuous as possible. As the incisions are so small they are usually not significant after liposuction.

When will I feel back to normal?
This varies from person to person but most people go back to work after a week and resume normal exercise at 4-6 weeks.

What about fees?
The total cost of the operation will include the surgeon’s fee, a fee for the anaesthetist and a surgical assistant and hospital costs. These may very depending on the length and complexity of your operation. Dr Buckland will provide you with a full quote prior to surgery.
